Lessons from Joseph

I spent the last month reading a beautiful, classic book. It is Joseph and His Brothers by Thomas Mann. This book greatly influenced me personally and professionally. It is about Joseph from the Old Testament. It was a true delight to read the book and apply it to my own life and business. The following paragraphs highlight how the book impacted me.

Joseph was blessed with charm and very unique skills . He has honest about his skills and used them to bless others. He served others in providing food , water and resources. He was promoted because of his beauty, character and leadership skills but was humbled when the extra attention caused conflicts with others. I see the importance of recognizing my own unique skills that I use in business, yet I see the importance of humility in my interactions with others. I know I do not know everything and I seek to learn from others.

Joseph was successful at business. He helped many , but maintained respect for those he helped. He served in treating others with dignity by allowing those who received help to give of their livestock and land. I can see how people would feel comfortable approaching Joseph even though he had great power. I feel I have knowledge and products that would benefit others but I want them to feel comfortable in engaging with me. I treasure the idea of mutual giving and receiving in business and I see how it is successful.

Joseph did not have an easy life and fell into two pits before becoming a leader. He was resilient. He was forgiving, in spite of others giving him evil treatment. He later recounted how the awful events all happened for his good and for the good of others. The road to success is not easy and many have hardships and conflicting relationships. I have had my share of hard times and conflicts in my work environments, but I realize these were all necessary in order for me to grow and find my niche. I have developed resilience and forgiveness and have been more peaceful as a result of this.

I would recommend this book to any one who is willing to complete the challenge of reading a 1,200 page book that is chock full of life lessons. The lessons are ancient but can be very easily applied to life today. Please reach out to me at moncoach23@gmail.com Karen Skelton
